Google is launching a new app, Read Along, that aims to help elementary school students practice their reading skills and stay educationally engaged amid school closures due to coronavirus. The new Android app is based on Google’s existing application, Bolo, which launched in India last year with a catalog of read-along stories in both English and Hindi. The updated and rebranded version is now globally available with support for nine languages.

Kids are guided through Read Along with the help of an “in-app reading buddy” named Diya. “She gives [kids] positive and reinforcing feedback along the way, just as a parent or teacher would,” according to Google. “Children can also tap Diya at any time for help pronouncing a word or a sentence.”
Google says voice data captured by Read Along is analyzed on-device and isn’t sent to Google’s servers. The app will also work entirely offline, though you will need to connect to Wi-Fi if you want to download new stories for your kid to work through. Read Along also won’t require a sign-in and doesn’t have ads or in-app purchases, according to Google.
As the COVID-19 pandemic has forced students to stay home from school, Google has also extended free access to some advanced Google Meet features to G Suite and G Suite for Education customers until September 30th, donated 4,000 Chromebooks to rural students in California, and launched resource pages to help teachers and families educate students using Google products.

How to use Google’s Read Along app
1. Download Read Along for Android free from the Google Play Store.
2. Read the privacy policy. Google says the app has no ads or in-app purchases, and after the initial download of the app and its stories, it works offline without Wi-Fi or data. It also doesn’t require a sign in. However, you do have to give it permission to record audio, and to take a photo if you want progress to be saved. But voice data is analyzed in real time on the device, and is not sent to Google’s servers, the company says. If you’re comfortable with that, tap Got It.
3. Tap on the virtual assistant Diya, and give the app permission to record audio, so that the app can listen and give feedback.
4. Explore the story library, play a game or download a new story from the list of options.
5.Tap the story you want to read. You’ll see a digital storybook page, with Diya at the bottom of the screen. When you read a word and get it right, a star will appear. If you get it wrong, a red line will appear and you can tap the word to hear it said aloud.
