Good news! NPS holders will get a big benefit, central government employees recommended to get 50 percent pension of their last salary
There is good news for central government employees. The government may make a big increase in their pension benefits under the National Pension System (NPS). The panel headed by T.V. Somanathan has recommended guaranteeing up to 50 percent of the last basic salary as pension to the employees. If the recommendation is accepted, then 50 percent of the basic salary of the employee before retirement will be given as monthly pension.
In March 2023, the panel headed by Finance Secretary T.V. Somanathan was formed to suggest ways to increase pension benefits under NPS for government employees without reverting to the Old Pension System (OPS). Many states have started abandoning NPS and returning to OPS. According to a report in an English newspaper, the panel submitted its report to the government in May. The report is largely influenced by the Andhra Pradesh NPS model implemented in 2023. It can be called a mixed model of old and new pension scheme. The shortfall in the pension fund to meet the guaranteed pension amount will be covered from the central government budget. This will benefit about 87 lakh central and state government employees who are registered in NPS since 2004.
Under the Andhra Pradesh Guaranteed Pension System (APGPS) Act, 2023, government employees are given 50 per cent of their last salary as monthly pension. This includes dearness relief (DR). Apart from this, 60 per cent monthly pension is guaranteed to the spouse of the deceased employee.
